An architecture firm has put a modern twist on the popular Vietnamese "tube house." The five-level residence in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is home to three generations. Pham Trung, the studio's director, told Insider that tube houses are also popular in Vietnam because they can provide more housing for people in its crowded cities. The company designed and constructed the skinny house for a family of six for 554 million Vietnamese dong ($230,000). It took the studio about two months to devise a full concept and complete drawings, and a further five months to construct.

"The price of global rice prices is particularly worrying," Qingfeng Zhang, a senior director from the Asian Development Bank, told CNBC. Other than India, food inflation has been relatively tame in Asia so far this year. Underscoring how higher food prices erode purchasing power, ADB suggested at that time that a 10% rise in domestic food prices in developing Asia would push 64.4 million into poverty, based on the $1.25-a-day poverty line. Moreover, this spike in rice prices is happening amidst widespread lower food prices. watch nowThis means any spikes in food prices will only translate to food inflation toward the end of this year or early 2024.

One of the wisest, most beautiful and unsettling exhibitions in New York this summer is “Tuan Andrew Nguyen: Radiant Remembrance” at the New Museum, a show about coming to terms with the intergenerational trauma of war. Nguyen works in video and also makes art objects pertaining to them. Nguyen was born in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1976, and came to the United States with his family three years later. The artist’s first major exhibition in an American museum, “Radiant Remembrance,” has been organized by Vivian Crockett, a curator at the museum, and Ian Wallace, a curatorial assistant. Its video installations focus on people who live in the shadow of the two long wars for Vietnamese independence.

A farmer harvests rice by a paddy field outside Hanoi, Vietnam June 10, 2019. Exporters are rushing to cover rice supplies from farmers who have raised prices following a surge in the world market, putting millions of dollars worth of deals at risk. 2 and 3 exporters respectively, are estimated to ship more than one million metric tons of rice in August. While large exporting houses are likely to fulfil contracts, smaller trading companies are expected to default on shipments, traders said. Importers, including the Philippines, are likely to seek direct deals with governments of exporting countries to ensure critical food supplies.

Scientists decode an ancient curry recipe

The sandstone slab, buried 2 meters (6.5 feet) below the surface, was dug up in 2018 at the Oc Eo archaeological complex in southern Vietnam. The site was once an overseas trading hub of an ancient Southeast Asian kingdom known as Funan, according to a new study of the substances found on the slab. The findings offer clues to how curry — and the people who made it — migrated to Southeast Asia. “Nowadays, preparing curry in Vietnam has become much simpler for most families due to the widespread availability of curry powder in supermarkets. Nguyen added that the team planned to recreate the 2,000-year-old curry based on the ingredients found at the site.

When Vietnam fielded its first women’s national soccer team in 1997, its players wore oversized jerseys made for men. In the years after the Vietnam War — called the American War here — ended in 1975, economic reform took precedence over sports. The Vietnam Football Federation, which governs soccer in the unified country, was not established until 1989. In its early days, soccer was widely considered a game for men, too hard and demanding for women to play. “Society didn’t accept the existence of such a team,” said Mai Duc Chung, 74, Vietnam’s women’s national coach then and now.

Vietnam's tech startups are reaping the benefits as the country sets its sights on becoming a fully digital society by 2030. In 2021, new startup support centers Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City were announced. It ranked third in terms of deal count in Southeast Asia, and fourth in deal value last year, the report said. Notably, domestic funds were the top investors in local startups last year, accounting for 45% of total deal value. However, the total value of investment in Vietnamese startups was only $634 million in 2022 — down 56% year-on-year from the record high of $1.4 billion in 2021, the report noted.

I had the opportunity to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, which are just outside Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The tunnel network was started in the late 1940s and used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. One of the most memorable parts of my trip, and indeed my life, was an excursion to the Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City in the south of Vietnam. They provided a subterranean world from which the Vietnamese guerilla fighters - the Viet Cong - could launch attacks and hideout. Take a look inside the stifling tunnels, one of the Vietnam War's best-preserved relics.

Vietnam aims to cut its rice exports to 4 million tons a year by 2030, the government said in a document detailing its rice export strategy, down from 7.1 million tons last year. Rice export revenue will fall to $2.62 billion a year by 2030, down from $3.45 billion in 2022, the document said. Vietnam will diversify its rice export markets to reduce its reliance on any country, the government document said. "I doubt the strategy will materialize, as rice production depends on supply and demand, not on a government decision," another rice trader in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang said. Rice exports from Vietnam in the first four months of this year rose 40.7% from a year earlier to 2.9 million tonnes, according to government customs data.

Amelia Earhart will always be among history’s mythic disappearing acts, but aviation’s reigning mystery is the 2014 vanishing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The calamity, which occurred nine years ago this week, remains as much a puzzle as ever according to “MH370: The Plane That Disappeared,” a three-part Netflix documentary series that banks and swoops and rolls through all the possibilities, landing on the only consensus ever reached: that none of what happened was an accident. To recap, the Boeing 777 left Kuala Lumpur in the early hours of March 8, a “routine red-eye,” as someone says, that was supposed to deposit its 227 passengers and 12 crew people in Beijing later that morning. As it was about to leave Malaysian airspace, the air-traffic controller and pilot bid each other good night. It was the last thing heard from MH370, which never made contact with Ho Chi Minh City and whose multiple communications systems suddenly went dark.
So the idea that artificial intelligence chatbots, such as ChatGPT and Bing, can research travel destinations and create itineraries is intriguing. I went to the developer's website, clicked on the word "ChatGPT," registered for an account — and started chatting. "All of the places I recommended have great online reviews," ChatGPT replied, providing ratings from Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Google for each hotel. But ChatGPT couldn't show photographs of the hotels or help book them — although it did provide ample instructions on how to do both. Every city I asked ChatGPT about resulted in the bot praising the local food scene.
The firm's Pouyuen Vietnam factory will cut 3,000 jobs this month and not extend labour contracts for another 3,000 workers later this year, the officials said, declining to be identified because they were not authorised to speak to media. The Pouyen Vietnam factory supplies global companies such as Nike Inc. (NKE.N) and Adidas AG (ADSGn.DE) and is one the biggest employers in Ho Chi Minh City, with 50,500 workers. Pou Chen shares fell 1.2% in early afternoon trade in Taiwan in a broader market (.TWII) that was down just 0.1%. Telephone calls to a factory labour union official were not answered. The plan to cut jobs marks a reversal for the company that in 2021 faced a labour shortage and manufacturing disruption in Vietnam due to the coronavirus pandemic.
